Cafe Racer Customs Magnum
By Anthony van Someren - 24 Feb 14
Will and Simon from award-winning Cafe Racer Customs follow up on the success of their CRC#6 with the sublime ‘Magnum’. Further developing their contemporary take on classic cafe racer culture, they have built an astonishing machine based on the legendary Harris Magnum.
Harris, born in the cafe racer heyday of the early 1970s, have built a peerless reputation for production-based racing machines, enjoying success at World Superbike, TT and World Endurance level. They enjoyed considerable success with their Yamaha 500 GP bikes and built chassis for other GP teams. The Magnum was essentially the endurance bike with bodywork and lights, and a right handful for the most adept of road riders.
CRC took a donor Magnum MKII and went to work with their engineering and fabrication prowess, exploiting the finest materials and components available. The Harris frame was fully refurbished and powder coated with the seat configuration revised. The Suzuki GSX1100 EFE engine was rebuilt with a Wiseco 1170 big bore, and a NCK gas-flowed head. The crank was welded and the cases Triple S powder coated.
Brembo 320mm floating discs were fitted on Talon billet hubs, and Brembo calipers fitted to the Ohlins R&T forks. The Ohlins rear shock was custom made, and a Brembo Goldline rear caliper fitted. The rims are Excel with stainless steel spokes. Rupe’s Rewires created a custom loom with all new components and DYNA ignition and coils were fitted. Mikiuni 34mm flatsides with K&N filters were set up on the dyno.
CNC custom billets instrument mounts, engraved yokes, rear-sets and hangers were mounted, and Ducati switch gear employed alongside Smiths tacho and speedo. The 22 litre alloy tank, seat unit and front mud guard were custom fabricated by CRC, and painted by Khameleon Customs. The upholstery trimmed by Stan Leathers.
The Magnum is truly a beast to behold. A stunning contemporary take on an out and out road going racer. As always with CRC, no expense has been spared, and no detail overlooked, the spec list reads like “War And Peace”. A feat of engineering and design, the Magnum is another masterpiece from the CRC crew, the essence of half a century of Cafe Racer tradition distilled into a unique hand built motorcycle.
